SEC高2 ニュージーランドターム留学レポート⑧
肌寒い季節になってきました。今ニュージーランドは花粉のシーズンで辛いですが、皆普段からティッシュを使わない文化に驚きました。最初は聞き取りにくかったニュージーランドのアクセントにも慣れてきて、毎日楽しく過ごせています。他の国から来た留学生や現地の人と仲良くなれて一緒にたくさんの場所に行きました。毎日学校に行くのが楽しみです。楽しいことだけでなく大変なことも色々ありましたが、Internationalの担当の先生方やスクールアドバイザーの方々が助けて下さるたびに自分はたくさんの人に支えられているんだなと実感しました。
私の学校ではマオリ文化を重んじる学校で、出席や集会の挨拶はマオリ語で行うことが多いです。また、NZ Experienceという授業ではニュージーランドの歴史やマオリについて学ぶことができます。授業では英語とマオリ語が混ざって頭が混乱することもありますが、マオリ文化を伝承していこうという姿勢に感銘を受けます。また私の学校は何か実績をあげたらバッヂが貰えて、貰ったバッヂをブレザーにつけるという文化があります。私はボランティアクラブに参加したらバッヂを貰えて、士気が高まりました。日本にはない斬新な文化で、たくさんバッヂをつけているyear13の先輩方がかっこいいです。
ニュージーランドはたくさんの映画の撮影地になっています。元々私はニュージーランドの環境保護と映画撮影について興味があったので週末にガイド付き自然保護ボランティアウォークに参加しました。このウォークでは歴史や自然について学ぶことができます。私は今まで「自然は守るもの」と考えていたのですが、一言で自然を守ると言ってもニュージーランドでは「今ある自然を維持する」という意味であって、人間が多く関わらないようにしているのが面白かったです。マオリ語の"Kaitiakitanga"を意識している人が多くて驚きました。Kaitiakitangaは「先祖から受け継いできた土地を保護する」という意味があり、私のお気に入りのマオリ語です。これまで私は自然に対する意識があまり高くなく、ニュージーランドの人の自国愛と自然への思いが自分には新しくてもっと深く知りたくなりました。あと数週間のニュージーランド生活を悔いなく過ごしたいです。
The weather has turned cold. It's pollen season in NZ now, and it's tough, but I was surprised by the culture of not using tissues regularly. I'm getting used to the NZ accent, which was hard to understand at first, and I'm enjoying it every day. I've become friends with international students from other countries and locals, and we've been to lots of places together. I look forward to going to school every day. While there have been challenges alongside the fun, every time the teachers and school advisors at the international office help me, I truly feel how many people have supported me.
My school places great importance on Māori culture; attendance and assembly greetings are often in Māori. Also, in the NZ Experience class, I learn about New Zealand's history. In class, both English and Māori are used and it can be confusing, but I'm impressed by the commitment to preserving Māori traditions. My school also has a culture where you earn badges for achievement and pin them on your blazer. I joined the volunteer club and getting a badge really boosted my morale. It's a unique custom not found in Japan, and Year 13 students with lots of badges pinned on look really cool.
NZ has been the filming location for many movies. Since I was originally interested in NZ's environmental conservation and filmmaking, I joined a conservation volunteer walk over the weekend. This walk taught me about history and nature. I thought of nature as something to be protected, but it was interesting to learn that in NZ, protecting nature means maintaining what already exists and minimizing human interference. I was surprised by how people in NZ are conscious of the Māori concept of "Kaitiakitanga". Kaitiakitanga in Māori means protecting the land inherited from ancestors, and it's my favorite Māori word. I'd never really thought about nature before, and their love for their country and their connection to nature felt new to me. It made me want to learn more. I want to make the most of my remaining weeks in NZ without any regrets. (SEC S2 K.N.)
