【カナダ】ウェストバンクーバーセカンダリーより - Daniel -
Hello, my name is Daniel Gabura, I am a Canadian student from West Vancouver. This is my first time in Japan and my first time taking part in an exchange program. I am attending Mejiro Kenshin High School here in Japan. At Mejiro they have a festival called Toyosai. At this festival all of the classes put on either a performance or run a shop selling something (generally food) and they theme their classroom decoration to fit what they are selling. Some clubs also get classrooms for performances or shops relating to their club. In Vancouver we do not have anything like this so it was a very cool and unique experience for me.
I started out by helping my homeroom class decorate their room for the festival. We spent a day putting up decorations and painting signs and generally having fun. The next day we came in and the festival started for real. It was open to anyone who had tickets, so generally parents and friends of the students, as well as all the students who take turns working at their class shops. I was given free reign to wander around and look at all the shops and performances. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety and quality of the food and drink that was available. After spending some time admiring the classrooms I had to do my duty as an exchange student and make a speech in the English speaking society's classroom. I wrote the speech earlier that week and the Japanese teacher helped me translate the introduction into Japanese. After I finished making my speech I was allowed to go back to enjoying the festival. My favourite things I saw were the dance club's performance and the cheerleading team's performance. In Vancouver we don't have a cheerleading team so this was my first time seeing live cheerleading and it was very impressive! I also enjoyed the baked goods, hot and cold food available in the other classrooms.
The festival runs for two days and I had to make speeches both days but that was a small price to pay for such a fun experience. This was a very cool thing to be a part of because it really showed a sense of school pride. It also gave a lot of talented students the chance to to show off their impressive skills. Overall I really enjoyed myself and I think it was a really fun way to spend two days in Japan. I am glad I got the opportunity to be a part of it.

みなさんこんにちは。ダニエル・ガビュラです。カナダのウエストバンクーバーから来た留学生です。日本へ来たのも交換留学に参加したのもこれが初めてです。ここ日本で目白研心高校に通っています。目白では桐陽祭という文化祭があり、各クラスが出し物やお店（一般的には食べ物）を出し、教室にそれぞれのテーマに沿った飾り付けをします。いくつかの部活も教室を借りて部活に関する出し物やお店を出したりします。バンクーバーではこのような催しはないので、これは私にとってすばらしくユニークな経験でした。
まず、この文化祭への参加はホームルームの部屋の飾りつけを手伝うことから始まりました。一日かけて飾り付けしたり看板を塗ることは楽しかったです。翌日は桐陽祭本番で、ご両親や生徒の友だちなどチケットを持っている人は誰でも、また、交代でクラスの仕事をする生徒たちも同様に入れました。私は特別にすべての店や出し物を見て回れる自由時間をもらいました。提供される食べ物や飲み物の豊富さと質の高さには本当に驚きました。そうしていくつかのクラスを見て回った後、私は留学生としてスピーチするためにESSの教室へ行きました。この日に先立ちスピーチを書きましたが、自己紹介の箇所は日本語の先生が手伝ってくれて日本語にしました。スピーチが終わったら、また桐陽祭を見て回りました。私が気に入ったのはダンス部とチアリーディング部の演技でした。バンクーバーにはチアリーティングのチームはないので、生で初めて見ましたがとてもよかったです！それから他の教室で焼き菓子やあったかい食べ物や冷たいものも楽しみました。
文化祭は二日間行われ、両日ともスピーチをしなければなりませんでしたが、このような楽しい経験のための代価としては大変ではありませんでした。文化祭は学校の精神を示す一つのすばらしい行事です。さまざまな生徒が自分たちの能力を紹介するいい機会でもあります。振り返ると、私自身とても楽しめましたし、このような機会に関わることができてうれしく思いました。
