【ニュージーランド】SECターム留学レポート - H.T -
ニュージーランドでの生活が始まってから今週で2週間が経ちました。学校では留学生の友達はもちろん現地の友達を作ることができました。またホストファミリーとの関係は良好で、この2週間で2回釣りにいき、そこでとれたお刺身を振る舞ってくれるなど食生活も充実し、日本にいたときと同じくらい居心地のよい日々を過ごしています。今回のレポートは、「学校生活」と「日常生活」について報告します。
まず、学校生活についてです。私が最も驚いたことは、私が通っている学校にはチャイムがないということです。インターネットで少し調べてみると、NZでは非常ベルのようなチャイムを使用している学校もあるようで、授業の開始と終了時の様子は学校によって異なるようです。私の学校にはチャイムがないので、時間になったら突然みんなが一斉に移動します。また、日本の一般的な全日制の高校とは違い、クラス全員が同じ時間割で過ごしているわけではありません。ですから、誰かについて行っても自分と同じ授業を受けているとは限らないので、事前に自分の授業の場所と時間を把握しておかないといけません。時間割を把握した上で、チャイムに頼らず時間通りに動くことに、少しずつ慣れてきました。
次に、日常生活についてです。私のホームステイ先には、私以外に2人のドイツ人学生が滞在しています。1人はすでに２年間ニュージーランドにホームステイしていて、去年学校を卒業しているので今年中にはドイツに帰る予定だそうです。もう一人は私と同じタイミングでホームステイし始め、私は彼と毎日学校に通っています。
私はこの２週間を通して、実際に現地に来てみなければ分からないことがたくさんあると知りました。例えば、事前情報では、ニュージーランドの家庭の中には、水に厳しくシャワーを短時間で済ませなければならないこともあると聞いていましたが、私のホストファミリーの場合は、そこまで厳しくありませんでした。ニュージーランドは多様化先進国で、家庭ごとに全く異なる生活習慣や価値観があるということを実感しています。日本で集めた情報だけが必ずしもニュージーランドのすべてのケースに当てはまるわけではなく、私が今通っている学校や、滞在先で経験していることも、やはり、これからのニュージーランド留学のすべてのケースにあてはまることではないと思います。事前に日本で集めた情報は参考程度に考えて、実際に自分の目で見て、体験して、その場に合わせて判断していくことが大切だと気づきました。これからも、さまざまな発見を大切にしながら、充実した留学生活を送っていきたいと思います。

Two weeks have already passed since I arrived in New Zealand. I have been able to make local friends as well as international student friends at school, and I have a good relationship with my host family. I have gone fishing twice in two weeks. They served me sashimi made from the fish they caught there, so I enjoy my life in New Zealand like the way it was in Japan.
One thing that surprised me when I came to New Zealand is that there are no chimes at the beginning and the end of each class at my school. Because of that, everyone moves to different classrooms at the same time. Also, unlike in Japanese schools in general, not everyone has the same timetable, so you have to know where and when your classes are in advance. Even if you follow someone in the same class as you, the student may not be heading to the same classroom as you for the next period.
There are two students from Germany in my host family's house. One has already been homestaying in New Zealand for two years and finished school last year, so he is planning to move to Germany by the end of this year. The other started homestaying at the same time as me. I go to school with him every day.
Throughout these two weeks, I have experienced that "Seeing is Believing." One reason for this is that some of the things I had heard about life in NZ before coming here are not so strict in my case. For example, before coming to NZ, I learned that in New Zealand, some students may be asked to take a shower very quickly as it takes time to heat a lot of water in a tank. But luckily, it was not the case with me. My host family has a swimming pool, Jacuzzi, and dishwashers, and they told me I could use the shower for however long I wanted to. In this way, I learned that the information I had gathered in Japan was not always the case with everyone. Therefore, you never know what will happen until you experience it yourself. We need to be open and flexible to new experiences.
