SEC高2 ニュージーランドターム留学レポート⑦
ニュージーランドに来てから既に一カ月経ちましたが、あと1年は留学したい気分でいます。来る前からなんの心配もなく楽しみにしていました。実際に来ても日本の僕が住んでいる地域ではできないことが沢山あり、毎日外に出かけています。
学校が始まってからは周りの人になるべく声をかけて人脈を広め、たくさんの友達ができました。日本と比べるとニュージーランドの人の方が初対面でも声をかけやすく、明るくて元気な子が多いです。僕が通っている学校では留学生が七十人くらいいて日本人が15人くらいいます。ドイツやコロンビアからの留学生が大半です。皆とてもフランクで話しやすいです。
ホームステイ先は心地よく、料理も美味しいです。ほぼ毎日ラム肉を使った料理ですがアジア風の料理にアレンジしたりして工夫し、おいしく飽きずに食べられています。ホストファミリーもとても優しい人たちです。
学校の授業は全て英語で、自分が希望した授業を受けられています。僕が選択している授業は：宇宙科学、体育、保健体育、英語、数学、生物です。1番気に入っている授業は生物です。現在の授業内容は、近くの海岸での生態系を分析しています。授業ではレポートやグラフを書いたり、たまに近くの海岸へ行き観察をします。とても面白い授業です。英語の授業では主に映画や歌詞を中心に授業をしていきます。映画だとしたら、カメラワークの意味や、その技法による視聴者への影響を細かく説明します。歌詞であれば作者の意図や言葉の意味を分析します。分析を終えたら、SEEL paragraph と言い、主張、具体例、具体例の説明、実生活で見られる部分、に分けて文をそれぞれ書き、最後に一つのエッセイとして繋げて完成させます。作品を中心に客観的に説明文を書く課題が多いです。英語の授業をする先生は前職として映画関係の仕事に就いたことがある人が多いです。
放課後は友達と近くの海や公園で遊んだり、おしゃべりをしたりします。都心からは離れた所にいますが、楽しめる場所が沢山あります。現在は近くのジムに週に4日通い、自分の体づくりを頑張っています。休日は図書館で課題を終わらせたり、絵を描いたりして過ごしています。課題を終えた後には友達とモールへ行ったり、海で泳いだりしています。他国からの友達の価値観や距離感が日本とは違うところも多く見られます。挨拶をするときは握手やハグをします。話をするときは自分の考えや気持ちを素直に言葉にして会話をします。周りの目を気にしない人がほとんどです。ここでの生活は快適で人間性が豊かな人ばかりで毎日面白いことでいっぱいです。日本とは異なる事がたくさんあり、良いと感じるところもあれば、"自分には合わないな"と思うこともあります。実際その場に自分の身を置かないと何もわからないと実感しました。
It has already been a month since I came to New Zealand, but I already feel like I would like to study abroad here for another year. Even before coming, I was not worried at all and was looking forward to it. After arriving, I realized there are many things I can do here that I could not do in the area where I live in Japan, so I go out and have fun every day.
When school started, I talked to as many people as possible, so I made friends easily. Compared to Japan, people in New Zealand are easier to talk to even if it is the first time meeting. There are many bright and energetic people. At the school I attend, there are about seventy international students, and about fifteen of them are Japanese. Most of the other international students are from Germany and Colombia. Everyone is very friendly and easy to talk to.
My homestay is very comfortable, and the food is delicious. We eat dishes made with lamb almost every day, but they are sometimes arranged in an Asian style, so I never get tired of them. My host family is very kind.
All of the classes at school are taught in English, and I registered for the classes that I chose. The classes I took are: Space Science, Physical Education, Health, English, Mathematics, and Biology. My favorite class is Biology. Currently, we are analyzing the ecosystem of a nearby beach. In class, we write reports and graphs, and sometimes we go to the nearby beach to observe the environment. It is an interesting class.
In English class, we mainly study from movies and song lyrics. If it is about a movie, we have to explain the purpose of camera work and how those techniques affect the audience. When studying song lyrics, we analyze the author's intentions and the meanings of the words. After finishing the analysis, we write something called a SEEL paragraph. This consists of a statement, an example, an explanation of the example, and a connection to real life. After writing each part, we connect them to complete one essay. Many assignments involve writing objective explanations based on the works we analyze. Most of the teachers who teach English previously worked in film-related jobs.
After school, I usually hang out with friends at the nearby beaches or parks, or just chat with them. Even though I live far from the city center, there are many places to enjoy. Currently, I go to a nearby gym four times a week and work out. On weekends, I finish my assignments at the library or draw pictures. After finishing my assignments, I go to the mall with my friends or swim in the ocean.
I have noticed that the values and sense of distance of friends from other countries are often different from those in Japan. When greeting each other, people usually shake hands or hug. When talking, people express their thoughts and feelings honestly in words. Most people do not worry too much about what others think.ere is comfortable, and many people have interesting personalities. Every day is full of valuable experiences. There are many things that are different from Japan. Some things are good, and some things make me think, "This might not suit me." I realized that you cannot truly understand something unless you are in that situation. (SEC S2 T.S.)
