【ニュージーランド】シャーリーボーイズハイスクールより - S.K -
New Zealand到着からおよそ50日が経過しています。
高等学校では「物理、数学、カルキュラス（計算中心の数学）、法学、経営学、ESOL（留学生向けの英語）」の授業を受講しています。現在、Assesmentという定期試験の時期に入っています。試験では英文を読みながら問題を解いているため、解釈に苦戦することがあります。試験に関して驚いたことは、物理のassesmentが実技実験ということです。日本のほとんどの学校では紙媒体を通じて知識や思考力を測ります。しかし、現地では実技実験からデータを取得し分析しグラフをつくり、結論を書く形式なんです。定期試験の出力の違いに驚きました。
一方、日常生活ではニュージーランドにおける客観的な日本の視点を観察しました。街並みでは現地の人は日本食といえば寿司を思い浮かべる人が多いのか「Sushi」と書かれた寿司屋が多く並んでいます。これは私たちの認識でいう インド料理＝カレー という印象ににています。他にも、クライストチャーチ周辺の自治体では日本の文化を体感できる「Japanfiesta」というイベントがあり、実際に私はそこへ他の日本人留学生の友達と足を運んでみました。そこでは多くの日本人の方がイベントを運営していました。また、日本のコンテンツ産業を基としたコスプレをしている現地の方もいたので、さらに交流を深めることができました。
最後に、留学半ばに新たな習慣ができました。それは英語の漫画を読むことです。クライストチャーチは図書館の施設が充実していて、登録をすれば区域にあるすべての図書館からある本をを１つの図書館に輸送することも可能です。最大３０冊借りることができるので、好きなアニメのものは十分に借りられます。また、英語圏の環境下にあるため、日本よりも英語訳の漫画の数がとても多いこと、さらにもちろんのこと無料で借りることができるのでおすすめです。実際に読んでみると辞書を握った状態にはなりますが、既知の内容であれば単語の予測は可能なので語彙も育まれていることでしょう。

It has been around 50 days since I arrived in New Zealand.
I am learning about "Physics,Mathematics,Calculus,Legal Studies, Business and English "in my high school: Shirley Boys' High School . Now, we do assessments like exams. Then, every time I solve problems, I have to read the sentences written in English, so I struggle at those times. Additionally, what I am surprised by is that physics assessment is an experiment ! In Japan, we always measure our skills through paper exams.
However, one of the classes has a ddifferent style from Japan. For example, in physics from experiments, I had to collect data, analyze them and made conclusions, which is the NZ style. That difference mede me really astonished.
On the other hand, I observed how people in New zeland see Japanese culture .There are many sushi restaurants in New Zealand. It might be that NZ people often identify that Japanese food is only sushi. This is like how we identify Indian food as curry.I also went to "Japanfiesta," which is an event where we can enjoy Japanese traditions with my friends. Their staff was organized by many Japanese people. Also, there are multiple cosplayers . That's why I could interact with NZ people even more.
At last, I found a new habit for me. That is to read some comics written in English.
The library in Christchurch has pretty good facilities. If we register an account, we can make a reservation to take some books and they are tranceported to a library which you can choose.The maximum number of borrowed books is 30,thus I could borrow my favorite series books at all. Overmore, there are enormous Japanese comics written in English which I can borrow for free. Therefore, I recommend them ! Actually, when I read them with my dictionary, it was difficult for me, but I knew the content a bit, I was able to imagine the story and guess what the words mean. It should have enhanced my vocabaries.
